Fireprizes was recorded shortly after we moved to North Carolina in 2005. Fire Prizes was recorded in our town's abandoned library during a flood in 2005. We had only recently arrived from Chicago and had set up our studio when the French Broad River jumped its banks and seeped and roiled through the streets of Marshall. The police had blocked off the town, but we were able to sneak down into the library, our windows facing out over the river and the train tracks, and make up songs while the water flowed into the basement. We were fleeing and there was a flood and the huge empty ex-library was a perfect place to be. Looking back, things may have been more bleak than they seemed at the time.
